Backyard # 1: FPI

Feeding Pueblo Initiative's first backyard garden project began in our very own backyard. When we moved to Colorado in November 2023, we were greeted by a barren, undeveloped lot. Determined to practice what we preach, we transformed this empty space into a flourishing garden. This project became a hands-on example of our commitment to sustainability and local food production. Through careful planning and hard work, we cultivated a variety of vegetables and herbs, turning a once unused area into a source of fresh, nutritious food for our family and our community. This journey laid the foundation for the community-driven gardening efforts we now champion throughout Pueblo.

Backyard #2: Becky, Dave & Angel

Our second backyard garden project was a collaborative effort for our friends and fellow board officers—Becky, Dave, and Angel. Their garden had unfortunately become overrun by weeds and was in need of a thorough cleanup and replanting. We stepped in to assist, transforming their overgrown space into a vibrant, productive garden once again. This project not only revitalized their garden but also strengthened our bonds within the FPI community. By working together, we demonstrated the power of teamwork and the positive impact of nurturing local gardens, reinforcing our commitment to community support and sustainable practices.

Backyard #3: Code Enforcement

Our third backyard project arose from an urgent call for help. Code enforcement had been issued against an elderly woman who was suffering from severe pain and needed immediate assistance with her overgrown yard. This was a situation unlike any we had encountered before, but we were determined to make a difference. Despite the challenge, we tackled the yard's overgrowth and completed the cleanup in just two sessions. This project not only provided much-needed relief for the woman but also demonstrated our commitment to responding to critical needs within our community swiftly and effectively.

Backyard # 4: A Beautiful Disaster

Garden 4 was truly a unique and stunning project, unlike anything I had ever seen. The creative use of unusual elements to craft garden art added a refreshing and artistic touch to the space. We planted a variety of fall vegetables, including pumpkins, squash, and an abundance of leafy greens, which brought both beauty and practicality to the garden. The process was not only productive but also incredibly enjoyable, and we had a blast bringing this artistic and bountiful garden to life. This project exemplified how creativity and gardening can come together to create something truly special and inspiring.

Backyard Garden #5: Rush For a Birthday Party!

Backyard Project #5 was a true test of teamwork and perseverance, as we had just one day to complete it in time for a little girl's birthday party the following day. The space was heavily overgrown with weeds and needed significant clearing. Upon arrival I was dismayed with what we could even get done once we noticed we could t use any of our power tools. But we got to work and pulled every single weed by hand and hedged the rest until the yard looked neat and clean.

Front Yard Before and After

Community Garden Proposal #1 West Side Pueblo

Our first proposed community garden is set to be established at The Salvation Army, located at the corner of S Prairie Ave and Thatcher Ave. This space, situated in a vibrant and welcoming neighborhood, presents an excellent opportunity for community engagement. The garden will be available for loan to local residents, who will have the chance to cultivate and maintain their own plots. By offering this garden to the community, we aim to promote local food production, foster community spirit, and provide residents with the tools to grow their own fresh produce. This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting sustainable practices and strengthening neighborhood connections.

Community Garden Proposal #2 East Side Pueblo

Community Garden Proposal #3

Community Garden 3 is proposed to become FPI's new base of operations, significantly enhancing our food production capacity to more than four times our previous output. This expanded space will allow us to maximize our growing potential and optimize our gardening practices. We plan to utilize the garden not only for increased food production but also as a hub for community engagement. By hosting events and activities, we aim to invite local residents to join us in cultivating the garden and participating in various programs. This initiative will strengthen our ties with the community, foster a collaborative spirit, and further our mission of sustainability and local food security.
